SBRSD processes task force recommendations

NEW MARLBOROUGH – A few months after receiving the report of the Elementary Task Force, the Southern Berkshire Regional School District is starting to move forward on delegating the report’s recommendations.

The school committee formed an ad hoc committee to fully delve into the recommendations of the report (first presented in December) and determine what to do next. The ad hoc committee determined most of the goals would fall under the purview of two groups, the executive evaluation subcommittee and the buildings, grounds and technology subcommittee.

The ad hoc committee (comprised of E. Bonnie Silvers, Charles B. Flynn and Kenzie Fields) felt many of the more broad-based report recommendations (such as generating more positive publicity for the school) should be incorporated into the superintendent’s goals, therefore sending them to the executive evaluation subcommittee.

Many of the other recommendations from the report directly involve the management and ownership of the elementary school buildings, issues the ad hoc committee thought would best be addressed by the buildings, grounds and technology subcommittee.

The ad hoc committee also brought forward the idea of creating an early childhood subcommittee to fully investigate one of the major recommendations of the task force report – expanded early childhood programming at all of the SBRSD elementary schools.

A full discussion of the formation of an early childhood subcommittee was postponed to the school committee’s May 9 meeting, scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. at Monterey School.

The school committee still did manage to create a new subcommittee, however.

A transportation subcommittee was formed to discuss the results of a survey conducted by Curriculum and Professional Development Coordinator (and future superintendent) David M. Hastings, specifically the need to provide after-school transportation to students district-wide.

The subcommittee’s four members are Arthur J. Batacchi Jr., Vito Valentini, H. Dennis Sears and Kristen Sparhawk.
