Third Thursdays kick off 2013 season in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD – Celebrating “Youth on the Move,” the 2013 Third Thursdays season kicked off on North Street.

The monthly series, which runs every May through October, started with music and activities highlighting youth performers and living an active and healthy lifestyle.

Performances included a sneak preview of Pittsfield High School’s production of Grease, the Third Thursday debut of Kids 4 Harmony, a group of young musicians, and a free concert by the PHS orchestra at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

In addition, teachers from Pittsfield Public Schools led some family-friendly activities in front of St. Joseph’s Church, including an African jump dance and a parachute dance, and the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts hosted a reception for the “Art in Our Schools” show, which features more than 200 works of art by Pittsfield middle and high school students.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) also held its “Minds Matter” fundraising walk, travelling up and down North Street through the Third Thursday crowd.

In addition to performances and activities, food was once again part of the Third Thursday experience. New to this year’s food and beverage offerings was an open-air beer garden, featuring craft beers and ales from Wandering Star Brewery, hosted by Thistle and Mirth in the covered walkway next to Hot Harry’s.

Other food vendors at the May Third Thursday included For the Love of Pie, Gunther’s Sausage Wagon, the How We Roll food truck and Lucia’s Latin Kitchen.

The full line-up for this year’s Third Thursday themes was also announced at the May event.

Oct. 17: Monster Mash

Like the May event, all Third Thursdays run from 5-8 p.m. on North Street, rain or shine.
