Girl Scout centennial celebration at Rockwell Museum

STOCKBRIDGE – The celebration continues.

The official 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA) took place this March, but on Saturday, the Norman Rockwell Museum will host “Girl Scout Festival: A Centennial Celebration” from 1-4 p.m.

In 1977, Mr. Rockwell was approached by the Franklin Mint to create a dozen designs for medallions depicting the ideals of the GSUSA to commemorate the 65th anniversary. As a long-time supporter of scouting, he created scenes depicting tenets of the Girl Scout Law, including “respectful,” “resourceful,” “be prepared” and “on my honor.”

Gallery tours of Mr. Rockwell’s Girl Scout-related works will take place at 1 and 3 p.m. At 2 p.m., museum visitors will have the opportunity to meet Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low, as portrayed by actress Kate Carney.

Throught the afternoon, outdoor watercolor painting sessions and basic horse grooming demonstrations will be available, the latter courtesy of Ken Whelihan of the Berkshire Equestrian Center.

Admission to the Girl Scout Festival is $5 per scout or scout leader (in uniform or with an active Girl Scouts membership card), or free with regular admission to the museum.
