Credit union donates school supplies

PITTSFIELD – Students at Egremont Elementary School were pleasantly surprised by a gift from the Credit Union of The Berkshires.

Boxes of school supplies collected by the credit union were recently donated to Egremont.

When asked why they thought their school got the free supplies, members of Karen McHugh’s fifth grade class eagerly said, “Because we’re awesome.”

Ms. McHugh, who is also a member of the credit union’s board of directors, suggested the school as this year’s recipient of the supplies.

Ultimately, Egremont was chosen due to its proximity to the credit union.

“It’s in our neighborhood,” said Melissa Morin, chief executive officer of the Credit Union of the Berkshires. “We want to be part of the community close by.”

“Thank you so much,” Egremont Principal Judy Rush told Ms. Morin. “This is such a generous thing for you to do.

“You have no idea how much this means to the students that folks are reaching out to them,” Principal Rush added.

This is the fourth year of the credit union’s “Busload of School Supplies” campaign, which has donated thousands of dollars in school supplies to local elementary schools. The previous three recipients are Morningside Community School, Craneville Elementary School and Conte Community School.

“As a community credit union, investing in our community is an important component of our mission,” Ms. McHugh said. “In recent years, we have awarded annual scholarships to two college-bound seniors; we have also supported programs and agencies such as Toys for Tots, the Berkshire United Way and the Pittsfield 4th of July Parade Committee.”

The Credit Union of the Berkshires was established in 1939 and is the second largest credit union in Berkshire County.

It operates under a community charter, which means its membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Berkshire County. Historically, many of the members work or have worked in education or at the post office, according to Ms. McHugh.
