Melissa Etheridge rocks the Shed at Tanglewood

LENOX – The Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood opened its 75th season with a performance by a rock music legend.

Two-time Grammy winning singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge brought her guitar-based folk-rock sound and raspy, smoky vocals to the Shed for a high-energy, two-and-a-half-hour set that included such hits as “I Want to Come Over,” “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One.”

The performance marked the beginning of the 2013 Tanglewood season and was the first of a series of popular artist acts set to take the stage this summer.

Last Friday’s concert also fell on the evening of the summer solstice.

“This is it, the summer has officially started,” Ms. Etheridge remarked during one of her opening songs.

She said this was her third show so far on tour for her new album, 4th Street Feeling, released in September 2012. Ms. Etheridge performed several songs from that album over the course of the evening.

Singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson warmed up the stage for Ms. Etheridge. His set included songs “Not There Yet,” “Breakdown More” and “Watching You Watch Him,” from his second album, Moving Up, Living Down, released last year. He ended with his hit “Rock and Roll” from his first album Sounds Like This.

The audience in the Shed rose to their feet when Ms. Etheridge took the stage. Her set included “I Want to Come Over,” “4th Street Feeling,” “You Can Sleep While I Drive,” “The Shadow of a Black Crow,” “Come to My Window,” “One Way Out,” “A Disaster,” “I Run for Life” and “Bring Me Some Water.”

She ended with “I’m the Only One” and a drawn-out version of “Like the Way I Do,” before finishing up with an encore performance of “Rock and Roll Me.”

This was not Ms. Etheridge’s first time at Tanglewood. She last performed here in 1989 opening for the band Little Feat.

She told the crowd she first came there in 1985 to see the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and she sat on the lawn with her wine and cheese.

“It’s good to be back here,” she said.
