Tanglewood starts summer season

LENOX – Following Melissa Etheridge’s kick-off of the 2013 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series, two more concerts drew crowds to the Serge Koussevitzky Music Shed.

Blending classic rock with the symphonic performances Tanglewood is known for showcasing, the second concert in the series, a “Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration,” featured the music of The Grateful Dead performed by the Boston Pops (conducted by Keith Lockhart in a tye-dye shirt) and legendary singer-guitarist Warren Haynes (The Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule).

The show also included songs from Mr. Garcia’s solo career, including “Russian Lullaby.”

The following afternoon, another music icon was in the Shed: Joan Baez.

While she did perform songs of her own, her time on stage was dominated by covers of other notable songs from her era, including “Imagine” (John Lennon) and “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” (Bob Dylan).

As the respective queen and king of folk music, Ms. Baez and Mr. Dylan often performed together in the 1960s and ’70s; she also performed the song “Diamonds and Rust,” which she wrote about him.

In addition to opening for her, The Indigo Girls also ended the matinee performance on stage with Ms. Baez, which included performing covers of two more Dylan classics, “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Next up in Tanglewood’s Popular Artists Series is singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, who will be performing in the Shed on July 4 at 7 p.m. Sara Watkins will open for Mr. Browne, and the show will be followed by a fireworks display.
