Vince Gill returns to Tanglewood

LENOX – As you can see from the photograph, country music legend Vince Gill recently entertained the drenched crowd at Tanglewood.

A brief storm erupted 15 minutes before concert time, causing havoc with those who set-up shop on the lawn, thus causing a 40-minute delay.

Keith Lockhart and the Boston Symphony Orchestra rolled with the punches as they opened this intermission-free show. My hat goes off to the BSO and Mr. Lockhart for their adaptability under these conditions.

Once Vince Gill took the stage with his five-piece band, the audience knew the “show must go on.” Mr. Gill noted that James Taylor was in the audience, thanking him for the invitation to play with him two years ago at Tanglewood.

Mr. Gill played several standouts with the orchestra, including “I Still Believe In You” and “When Love Finds You.” He made mention that Mr. Lockhart and his wife, singer Amy Grant, were classmates at Furman University (South Carolina).

His band was very tight, accompanying him on one of the concert highlights,
“My Pretty Little Adriana,” where Mr. Gill and his band received a standing ovation.

The week ahead at Tanglewood has many surprises.

On Thursday evening, a concert performance featuring the Boston-based Orchestra and Chorus of Emmanuel Music invade Ozawa Hall to perform John Habison’s opera The Great Gatsby. The performance will feature tenor Gordon Gietz as Jay Gatsby and soprano Devon Guthrie as Daisy Buchanan.

On Friday night, conductor Kazushi Ono welcomes a longtime Tanglewood favorite, pianist Leon Fleisher, to the stage.

Saturday night is the return of the remastered 1961 film West Side Story, featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein and performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Sunday, the BSO and conductor Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos welcomes cellist Lynn Harrel to the stage. She will play numbers from Stravinsky, Haydn and Beethoven.

Conducting fellows invade Ozawa Hall on Sunday evening.

On Wednesday, July 13, the Borodin String Quartet plays an 8 p.m. concert at Ozawa Hall featuring works from Brahms and Tchaikovsky.

Baritone Bryn Terfel joins pianist Natalia Katyukova at Ozawa Hall on Thursday evening, July 14.

Tanglewood is one of The Berkshires’ best cultural resources. Take advantage of its presence.
