Sheffield starts new committee

SHEFFIELD – Housing has long been an issue in Berkshire County. Now a new committee has been started to develop a plan for how to deal with the issue.

To address the housing issue, the board of selectmen has created a Community Development Strategy Committee.

Working with the committee will be Patricia Mullins of the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission as they look to develop a short plan to deal with issues of the economy and housing in the town.

The nine person board will include a member of the select board, the planning board, the housing commission and other at-large seats.

“This product needs to come from the community,” said Mullins. “This is not something that Berkshire Regional Planning can write for you.”

The committee will look to move quickly with a series of four meetings being planned in the coming months, with a public hearing to gather input as a kickoff for the committee to take place in late August.

“This should be a quick process that we move right through,” said select board chairwoman Julie M. Hannum.

Rannapo Road Update

The town is continuing to work to develop a plan to work on Rannapo Road. Currently the road is down to one lane.

The town is also hoping to work with NEMA and FEMA to receive federal funding for the project as they continue to move forward.

A full budget and timetable is not yet set for the project.
