Pan-Mass Challenge takes off this weekend

The 34th annual Pan-Mass Challenge will take place this weekend, with thousands of riders from all walks of life taking to their bicycles in an effort to raise money for cancer care and research.

The popular bike-a-thon is a fundraiser for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Those who participate commit to raise between $500 and $5,000, with 100 percent of donations going directly to the cause through the Jimmy Fund fundraising charity. Last year the event raised a record $37 million. Since the PMC began in 1980, a total of $375 million has been donated to Dana-Farber.

Cyclists can choose from 11 routes designed for varying levels of cycling and fundraising ability. There are five one-day routes ranging from 25 to 110 miles, and six two-day routes covering 153 to 190 miles. The starting lines are in Sturbridge and Wellesley, and the five finish lines include two in Provincetown and one each in Bourne, Wellesley, and Foxboro.

A group of local riders will be participating in this year’s Challenge. They will be riding for Forza-G, a team of about 50 riders, most from the Boston area. The Berkshire-based contingent on the team includes Christopher Fenton, Thomas Graham, Kevin Mitts, Greg Babich, Craig Smith, Jonathon Molk, Sam Smith, Rob McNinch, Suzanne Merritt, Matthew Callahan, and Daniel Moon.

Check out next week’s Beacon for full coverage of the event.
