The Open is now closed

I never got the memo that it is not allowed to refer to the British Open as the British Open anymore.
The announcers on ESPN said “The Open Championship” over the weekend  almost as many times as Don Orsillo says “in the inning” during one of his NESN broadcasts. They don’t dare call it a tournament.
Paul Azinger hit us with this gem , “and this, just a minute ago,….. earlier.”
Other comments heard during the telecast that were no different than we hear every weekend:
“You must avoid double bogeys out there today.”
“He’ll have a lot of green to work with.”
“He has an uphill lie in the bunker, shouldn’t be any problem.”
Speaking of Azinger, did you know that he was born in Holyoke MA?
Phil Mickelson spent two weeks in Scotland with his family, played a bunch of golf and made  2.1 million dollars. After taxes he cleared $ 840,000.00.  The Beatles were close in their song “The Taxman:” “There’s one for you and nineteen for me, cause I’m The Taxman.”
If you are of the belief that youth and power can outshine experience in major golf events lets check some facts from the recent event from Scotland.
Made the cut : Fred Couples, Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara, Ken Duke, Peter Senior and Sandy Lyle.
Missed the cut : Bill Haas, Ricky Fowler, Justin Rose, Rory McIIroy , Luke Donald and Nick Watney.
If you were in an Open pool at the office and had Nick Colsaerts to make the cut, don’t read the following. He six putted a hole to miss the cut by one shot. After his second round did he go to the putting green or to the nearest pub ?
Peter Senior , 53 year old Aussie, made a fine showing at Muirfield. Makes me wonder if there is a Peter Senior Jr., and if there is I guess the PGA pro would be be Peter Senior Sr. When he plays in Mexico do they call him Senor Senior? Regardless of where he tees off from are they now referred to as the Senior Tees?
It was not easy to watch Brandt Snedeker 4 putt # 15 on Saturday, eventual champion Phil Mickelson also had a 4 putt on his card.
Was the Open Championship real golf or carnival golf? You be the judge. Bubba Watson hit a six iron 315 yards and Charl Schwartzel drove the green on a 448 yard par four. Shiv Kapur had rounds of 68 and 71 and still finished +15 “for the championship.”
I wonder if all those goofy bunkers affect the pace of play with the public and membership of Muirfield. If an average player has to play out of there, the first thing they should do is call the beverage cart and then grab a club and go at it.
I’m told that the public can play Murifield for about $40.00 American money. Bring a lunch, and maybe supper.
After listening to Bill Belichick speak for seven minutes and taking questions for another fifteen, I could only visualize all the reporters leaving the room and being doused with balloons and confetti and being rewarded with a Klondike Bar.
