Pittsfield continues to look at Affirmative Action

PITTSFIELD – The city will play host to the award winning Civil Rights author, Professor Stewart Burns, in a free public forum entitled “Affirmative Action.”

The forum will be held in City Hall, 70 Allen Street, upstairs in the city council chambers, on Tuesday, August 27, at 4:00 p.m. After a 45 minute lecture regarding Affirmative Action’s history and policy, a question and answer period will follow.

Burns earned his Ph.D. in history and political philosophy at the University of California, Santa Cruz and has taught at the University of California, Stanford, Antioch University, and Williams College. He currently shares leadership of the Center for Learning in Action at Williams.

Professor Burns has worked for many years in movements for peace and social justice. When he was 14, he attended the historic “March on Washington “ which is commemorating its 50 year anniversary this month. He is the author of the award winning biography of Martin Luther King Jr. entitled “To the Mountaintop”(2004).

The lecture fits with current city politics.

The City of Pittsfield is currently seeking members of the African American, Hispanic and/or any other minority community to volunteer time in serving on an Affirmative Action Advisory Committee.

The committee will meet on a quarterly basis to hear the progress on Affirmative Action in areas pertaining to city policies and procedures. Anyone with  interest in participating on the committee should contact Michael Taylor, Personnel Technician, City Hall, Room #107, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
