Pilot to pilot

Since the primary election, Scott M. Pignatelli, a well-known and liked tradesman, has been the subject of the political questions of how he lost the register of deeds race in his hometown of Lenox and the adjacent Town of Lee.

Mr. Pignatelli was the odds-on favorite going into the race, with a public group of backers, many lawn signs and the goodwill of the community. His brother, State Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli, lives in Lee and his campaign manager Michael Sorrentino of Lenox is originally from Lee.

The tide seemed to change in the middle of the race with Jody Phillips, former Pittsfield city clerk, coming on strong with the support of many of the Pittsfield elected officials, past and present.

It was Patsy Harris of Hinsdale, a loyal employee in the office who ran and won. By every account, she was the ideal choice.

This brings up the question of what was the motivator for the suppose winner to end up in last place. We looked no farther than a letter to the editor in The Berkshire Eagle written by Attorney Timothy J. Sullivan, Jr., who was one of many lawyers and personnel from the courthouse who supported Ms. Harris.

Atty. Sullivan said he likes metaphors: “a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable and/or a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, esp. something abstract.”

Apparently the readers found the letter of value.

In this case we reprint the letter that Atty. Sullivan gave us and added our own whimsical bent to further explain in The View (on the Op-Ed page) this week: “No on-the-job training required for this candidate.”
