BHS hospitals recognized as top performers

The Joint Commision, the nation’s leading accrediting organization for hospitals, has named Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) in Pittsfield and Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington as “Top Performers” on “Key Quality Measures.”

BMC was recognized as a top performer in heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. Fairview was honored for pneumonia and surgical care.

BMC and Fairview were among the top 18 percent of Joint Commission-accredited hospitals that report core measure performance data, and are two of only 10 such hospitals in Massachusetts to achieve top performer recognition. In all, 620 hospitals nationwide received top performer honors.

“Berkshire Health Systems has a continual commitment to achieving the highest quality in the delivery of care to our community,” said David Phelps, president and CEO of Berkshire Health Systems.

“These measures show that independent organizations, such as The Joint Commission and many others recognize the level of care that BHS, our physicians, nurses and staff provide in critical areas of care,” he added. “Our community can be confident that the care they receive here, right at home, is the best available.”

Hospitals recognized as Joint Commission Top Performers must achieve a 95 percent or higher composite score on all the accountability measures reported to The Joint Commission in calendar year 2011 and had to exceed a 95 percent score for every reported measure.

The 95-percent mark means a  hospital provided evidence-based care in 95 percent or more of cases. Launched in 2011, The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures program recognizes accredited hospitals that attain excellence on accountability-measured performance. The program is based on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to be the best treatments for certain conditions.
