Grammy-winning jazz musician Paul Winter is slated to perform a benefit concert for Orion magazine on Saturday, September 7 at 6 p.m.
“We are really pleased that Paul Winter offered to play a benefit for Orion. He’s a musical icon of course, but also a trailblazer in exploring the world’s musical traditions and in bringing the natural world into his recordings,” said Orion outreach coordinator Erik Hoffner.
The concert will feature some of Winter’s earlier works as well as songs from his most recent compilation, the Flyways Project, inspired by the great bird migrations between Africa and Eurasia along the Great Rift Valley.
As Mr. Hoffner explained, Winter’s nature-inspired music fits in well with Orion’s content.
“His ‘symphony of the Earth’ has included whales, wolves, eagles and others over the years, so we couldn’t imagine a more appropriate musician for Orion to partner with, given the magazine’s focus on writing and art about nature, culture, and place.”
Winter, who lives in Litchfield, CT, has won seven Grammys over the course of his career. His most recent win came in 2011 for best new age album for his CD Miho: Journey to the Mountain. He has performed for audiences all across the globe.
The Orion benefit concert will take place lakeside in Salisbury, CT in the converted boathouse of Salisbury resident and Orion board member Anne MacDonald. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Old Inn on the Green.
The concert is a fundraiser for Orion, the Berkshire-based, award-winning, nonprofit and add-free environmental magazine. Reservations are required and tickets cost $350 per person. To reserve a spot, call 413-528-4422 or go to www.orionmagazine.org/concert.
