Lenox anniversary commitee formed

LENOX – The board of selectmen has officially formed a committee to plan the 250th anniversary of the town’s founding.

In forming the committee, the select board adopted guidelines for its composition and mission statement that were drafted by the Lenox Historical Commission. The commission also attached ideas for events, a possible year-long timeline focusing on a different period of Lenox’s history every month and a list of organizations, businesses and institutions the committee should consider involving in the festivities.

Finally, the commission suggested individuals who could be on the 250th Anniversary Steering Committee, people who could serve as at-large advisors and suggested the executive committee have a representative from the board of selectmen, the historical commission and the chamber of commerce.

Lenox will celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2017. One of the reasons the select board is forming a committee now is the historical commission has stated they would like the anniversary to be an all-town affair involving as many groups as possible, and starting to work on it now will go a long way towards making the anniversary a success.

In addition to forming the committee, the selectmen also appointed David Roche as the select board liaison to the 250th anniversary committee.

Those interested in serving on the commitee are encouraged to submit applications to Town Manager Gregory Federspiel.

“If not, expect a knock at your door,” said Selectman Roche, who will try to recruit suitable candidates to apply.

“You only have five years so don’t procrastinate,” said Select Board Chairman Kenneth Fowler.

“It’s gonna be a process,” said Selectman Roche in comments to The Beacon.

He also said although there would probably be only five or six people on the main committee, the anniversary committee would probably have a number of  subcommittees serving under it.

“I can envision probably five or six different committees underneath the main committee,” said Selectman Roche.

He added a good amount of planning would probably done this winter.

“It’s (the anniversary) gonna have a whole year of rememberances and celebrations,” said Selectman Roche, who participated in the town’s 200th anniversary in 1967. “I think its important that we involve a lot of people.”
