Berkshire Grown to host local food feast

GREAT BARRINGTON— Berkshire Grown’s 15th Annual Harvest Supper celebrating local food and farms will take place on Monday, September 16, from 6:00-8:00 p.m at Ski Butternut in Great Barrington.

Hundreds of people typically turn out for the event, which in the past has been held at Eastover Resort in Lenox. With the move to Ski Butternut this year, the Harvest Supper will now have more space for guests, including seating areas, and will also feature several first-time participating chefs.

More than two dozen Berkshire Grown member chefs and local beverage producers will be on hand for the event, which features dishes prepared using fresh ingredients from local farms. A few of the dishes this year include: from the Red Lion Inn – chilled summer ratatouille with sweet corn puree, baby arugula and crispy fried onions, featuring locally grown ingredients from Farm Girl Farm, Equinox Farm, Berry Patch, Foggy River Farm and Willow Brook Farms; from the Gala Steakhouse & Bistro – Thai BBQ pork confit with pickled radish, beet butter and spicy mustard greens, featuring ingredients from Climbing Tree Farm, Farm Girl Farm, Peace Valley Farm and Equinox Farm; and from Castle Street Café – lemongrass broth with cellophane noodles and vegetables, featuring ingredients from Farm Girl Farm, Indian Line Farm and Schoolhouse Gardens.

The evening also includes a silent auction and a drawing for food shopping sprees and gift certificates to Berkshire Grown restaurants and shops. Some of the prizes this year include dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, dinner at Blantyre, a raised bed garden box from Nature Works, an overnight stay at Stonover Farm Bed & Breakfast, and a load of Holiday Brook Farm’s famous “black gold” compost.

Restaurants and Berkshire Grown members featured this year include: Allium Restaurant + Bar, Baba Louie’s, Bell & Anchor, Café Reva, Canyon Ranch, Castle Street Café, Cranwell Resort, Firefly Restaurant and Catering, Gala Steakhouse & Bistro at Orchards Hotel, Guido’s Fresh Marketplace, Haven Café and Bakery, HR Zeppelin Fine Handmade Chocolates, John Andrews: A Farmhouse Restaurant, Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, Marketplace Kitchen, Martin’s Restaurant, The Meat Market, The Old Inn on the Green, The Red Lion Inn, Riverbend Café, Route 7 Grill, Savory Harvest Catering, Stagecoach Tavern, Table Six Restaurant, Wheatleigh, and Williams College Dining. Beverages will be provided by Barrington Brewery, Berkshire Mountain Distillers, Big Elm Brewing and MS Walker.

“Berkshire Grown links farmers with the community, all of us ‘eaters,’ to support our local farmers,” said Berkshire Grown executive director Barbara Zheutlin. “At the Harvest Supper, chefs prepare tastes of the bountiful harvest grown by our local farmers, showing us concretely why it’s important to keep our farmers farming. Berkshire Grown is a pioneer in the food movement, connecting farmers, chefs, retailers and the community.”

The dinner is by reservation only. Tickets are $70 for Berkshire Grown members and $80 for non-members. According to Berkshire Grown outreach coordinator Sheryl Lechner, tickets are still available and can be reserved by calling 413-528-0041. All proceeds benefit Berkshire Grown, supporting its Buy Local campaign as well as its Share the Bounty project, which buys shares in local farms and distributes the fresh food to low-income people throughout the region.

“The Harvest Supper celebrates our local farms and reminds us all – in a delicious way – why it’s important to support the farmers who grow and raise our local food,” said Zheutlin, who also thanked underwriters for this year’s Harvest Supper. “We are grateful to our network of generous supporters, who help us make this exciting event happen.”
